Whether you use social media, E-mail, a cell phone or a computer, you know that technology and communication has not only changed, but it has become part of our lives. With the help of volunteers, LOMO is making an effort to extend the camp experience year-round through camp specific social media campaigns as well as a bimonthly e-blasts. More importantly, we are opening up a digital window into daily camp life.
During Week 7 at Camp Mowana, several students and adult leaders have been given an iPhone as well as 6 challenges to complete. Two groups are competing against each other by taking unique pictures and publishing videos about their camp experience. During a typical week of youth camp, cell phones are strictly prohibited. However, we believe with direction and intentionality, we can bring technology to camp without it becoming a distraction. During our pilot week, the group of campers have been using only one cell phone and they are only using it for 15-30 minutes per day. Guidelines have been established to keep our campers engaged in camp life and camp staff will severely limit their use during the week. We hope that this will connect parents during a week at camp and give new families a chance to see activities and camp life through the eyes of our youth campers.
